Whispering, we gave her the green light to take the closest bird. She acknowledged that she saw it and was ready. The click of the safety heightened the Chesapeake’s senses. He could see the ducks, and he saw the gun shouldered and knew that soon he would be called on to do his job. Her first shot rolled the closest drake. There was no second shot.

Her first duck was a fat drake canvasback. I remained silent as Dad gave her a congratulatory hug and welcomed her to the ranks of the “outlaw gunners.” She has never let us forget it.
